The Nightcouncil

We are the Night Council of Groningen: a partnership that is committed to the vibrant nightlife of Groningen!

The nightlife has a lot to offer; nice things but also challenges. Think of (live) music and the never-closing bars with inappropriate behavior such as sexual harassment or discrimination.

With the Night Council we will approach the different aspects of nightlife, find solutions to the challenges and ensure that we can all enjoy Groningen nightlife to the fullest!

Lively Groningen

Groningen knows many cultures, social establishments, students and creativity.

That’s why we, as the Night-council, want to contribute to these wonderful aspects by focusing on (live) music, bringing together different cultures and by connecting the day with the night.

Cultural change

Unsolicited (sexual) behaviour is #1 annoyance in the Groningen nightlife.

Through the usage of various campagnes, we are going to make a cultural change in which first conscious is established to later, in step two, take concrete action against unsolicited behaviour.

Night city hall

In order to create a safe night, it’s essential to create a safe space in the night.

That’s why we plead for a night city hall: a place where everyone is welcome with their questions/issues about (sexual) assault, drugs, sex, music and any other aspect that’s linked to the night.

Origine

The creation of the night-council was a natural proces because it is based upon what the night needs. By anticipating on these needs the night can become safer and more lively.

Groups

The Groningen night is diverse and complex. That’s why it’s essential to split up the night into different categories in order to reach our goals.

From these categories we’ve created working groups that consist out of members who are specialised in one or more categories. By having such structure we ensure that the Groningen night is represented well.

Business Officer

In order to give the Night Council more structure, we have appointed a business officer / chairman. She is involved in policy matters and other business aspects of the Night Council as an organization. In addition, she is involved in keeping an overview of the working groups, activities and campaigns of the Night Council.

Safety

We think it is important that nightlife feels safe and familiar to everyone. That is why we set up various safety campaigns. Sexual harassment is a major problem in the Groningen nightlife, just like other types of harassment. That is why we want to ensure that everyone is more attentive to each other and takes care of each other.

Diversity

We want to focus on various forms of diversity, including diversity with regard to the music offer in the city. In addition, we want to promote diversity in the sense of cooperation with internationals, bringing together different cultures and the acceptance of all kinds of people in nightlife.

Night city hall

Our goal is to establish a night city hall. The night city hall will become a safehaven in the centrum of Groningen that is comparable to the first-aid at Dutch festivals. In the night city hall people will be able to get information/help about/with sex, STD’s, drugs, alcohol and/or (sexual) assault.

Alcohol & Drugs

Alcohol and drugs go hand in hand with the nightlife; sometimes this leads to trouble like people being too far out of it and needing (emergency) help. In order to prevent this we want to give drug-education and make drug-testing easier and more accesible.

(Live) Music

Without music there’s no lively city! That’s why we focus on the preservation of all kinds of music within Groningen. One of the things we want to make sure is that live music stays a part of the Groningen night. Furthermore we believe that it’s important that different organisation within Groningen communicate with each-other in order to prevent disappointment.

Supplement

We do our utmost to keep ourselves busy with every category of the Groningen night. Yet it may happen that we overlook something. If you think this is the case, please let us know! Contact us!

NIGHT COUNCIL MEMBERS

In order to properly represent the diverse character of the Groningen night it is essential that the Nachtraad consists out of members with diverse backgrounds.

That’s why we have members who are involved in (live) music, diversity, catering, safety, alcohol & drugs or that just love going out!

Anastasija Zihareva

Internationals

I am Anastasija, 26 years old, half Russian and half Finnish, born and raised in Latvia, lived in Berlin, Rhodes and now live in Groningen for the past 6 years. Here I studied international communication and pop culture.

I organize and participate in projects that focus on internationalization, often together with Merlin. I am also a fellow member of the European Music Council. In the Night Council I represent the events agenda Here & Now  www.hereandnow.nl  and the very diverse and growing group of internationals within the city.

Ashley Kollopo

Marketing, Inclusiviteit

Hallo allemaal, mijn naam is Ashley Helena Kollopo.

Loesje Drenth

Safety

Hi, my name is Loesje and in the near future I will focus on safety.

Ten years ago I moved to Groningen city to study and I soon became attached to the Groningen night. The past eight years I have worked almost exclusively at night in various places in Groningen.

During that work I noticed that although the students change, certain issues remain the same. Because the night is inextricably linked to the day, a number of issues merge. By assisting the Night Mayor, we hope to be able to do more for Groningen.

In the coming period, the security subgroup will mainly focus on intimidation and violence, how we can prevent this and how we should deal with it. With the aim of making the Groningen nights safer and therefore more fun.

Merel Cuperus

Business Officer

I am Merel and as a true proud Groninger I love this city with heart and soul. I have been in love with music since I was five and in the past twenty years this love has only intensified. At the moment I am coordinator of European subsidies at Eurosonic Noorderslag, an organization where music is of course of paramount importance.

As a member of the Night Council, I want to dedicate myself to the rich music scene in Groningen. Whatever genre and in what form it is presented, this scene should be encouraged. In addition, I also want to work for inclusivity and the security that goes with it. Groningen has become a beautiful international city, with very diverse people who can all offer a valuable addition and also deserve a safe place in the city.

Merlijn Poolman

Night-mayor

Since I started organizing concerts & tours at the age of 16 and then started a nightclub in Groningen in 2011, I have always been involved in connecting people from the most diverse corners. Since I became night mayor of Groningen since 2018, I have been honored to be able to perform this task with extra weight and because I like to do this with a group of people who can assist me in expertise and network in this mission, I founded the Night Council in 2019 .

The main purpose of the Groningen Night Council is to strengthen the Groningen Night in terms of safety, conviviality, diversity and above all wants to set the tone in how we interact with the nightlife and catering sector. Taking care of each other, even if you don’t know each other, is the aim and the Night Council is committed to achieving these goals through various working groups.

Leading the night council, bringing in topics, ensuring that there is a stable work structure and, above all, having everyone do what they are good at!

Misha Pchenitchnikov

Marketing, Alcohol & drugs, Night city hall

I am Misha and recently I program events in the basement of All Round where many emerging Groningen DJs also get a chance to develop. In addition, by spending a lot of time online at an early age, I have discovered that the internet is full of information on the “controversial” topics: alcohol & drugs. I became fascinated with these subjects and cultures that go with it and therefore started to read, watch and learn everything I could find.

Today I use this knowledge to make people wiser and thus create a safer and more fun environment for everyone. For example, I brought the national information project Unity to Paradigm Festival. That is why I will focus on alcohol & drugs within the night council to make the Groningen Night an even safer and more fun place!

Yorick Karseboom

(Live) Music, Diversity

Hi, I’m Yorick! I am 23 years old and I study philosophy in beautiful Groningen. I’ve lived here all my life and I’m damn proud of this beautiful city. I play in different bands myself and I like to organize music related events in and around the city. I also work as a bartender in Cafe-bistro Kult and as an administrator at Poppodium Vera.

I think that the Night Council can closely examine all aspects of the night, both the beautiful and the negative, from a variety of backgrounds. Together we are strong!

Within the Night Council, my goal is to create a beautiful night where everyone feels welcome. In addition, I like to see Groningen as a city that welcomes live music and does not see it as inherent noise pollution.
